The Speaking Heart

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers,” (Eph. 4:29).

When the Apostle Paul penned these words, he did not say that we should speak nicely to people UNLESS we don’t like them.  Whether we like an individual or not, a Christian’s job is to minister with our words, not to tear down.  We are in a rather ugly place right now in society, where the angry mob attacks at every opportunity.  If someone makes a mistake, we all but lynch them.  We demand an apology, a resignation, we demand JUSTICE!!!  We never really forgive, we simply forget, because the next ambulance drives by and we are all but ready to pounce on the next victim.  I am shocked sometimes, at what people will say to other people.  Have we forgotten that we are all humans?  Imagine how different the world would be if we not only spoke grace to others, but wanted grace for them as well.  That’s true love; when you desire that even your enemy be given grace (Matt. 5:44).

Jesus said it is not what goes into a person’s mouth that defiles them, but what comes out, because those things that come out of the mouth come from the heart (Matt. 15:11, 18).  Similarly, he said “…out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh,” (Matt. 12:34).

If the way we speak and the way we treat others does not reflect Christ, then we need look no further than our hearts.

Oh, let me pursue Christ that my heart might be pure, and by extension my words reflect the purity contained within me.

God bless,
